Abstract
A STUDY ON AIR POLLUTION IN SEOUL
From July 1st to the end of November 1970, a study on air pollution was made in Seoul City. The city was divided into 6 areas. i.e., the downtown area, the commercial area, the industrial area, the semi-industrial area, the residential area, and the park area. 16 surveying sites were selected each representing the characteristices of the area.
The measurement methods employed were the Lead dioxide method according to the A.S.T.M. D-2010-65 for sulfur oxides, the simplified English Deposit Gauge method for dustfall, the Digital Dust indicator for suspended particles, the detector method for sulfur dioxides (SO_(2)) and the Rion Noise meter for noise level.
The reuslts obtained are as follows;
1. The mean value of sulfur oxides was 1.80 §· SO_(2)/day/100cm^(2) PbO_(2), ranging from 0.32 to 4.72.
2. The mean values of sulfur oxides by area were 2.81 §· SO_(2)/day/100cm^(2) PbO_(2) in industrial area, 2.16 in downtown area, 1.17 in commercial area, 1.65 in semi-industrial area, 1.55 in residential area and 0.94 in park area, respectively.
3. The monthly mean value of sulfur oxides showed a steady increase form July, reaching a peak in November.
4. The degree of pollution with sulfur oxides showed that 45% of the total measurement was in the range of common degree, and 38.8% was above the range of middle degree, according to the Mr. Terabe¢¥s classification method.
5. The mean value of dustfall was 36.59 t/km^(2)/month, ranging from 8.69 to 95.44.
6. The mean values of dustfall by area were 72.32 t/km^(2)/month in downtown area, 50.54 in semi-industrial area, 24.19 in commercial area, 16.25 in park area and 15.39 in residential area, respectively.
7. The mean value of suspended particles was 3.4 §·/m^(3), ranging from 1.15 to 5.27.
8. The mean value of noise level was 73 phon, ranging from 50 to 99 phon.
9. The mean value of sulfur dioxides was 0.092ppm, and the concentration in downtown area was higher than that in industrial area.
